Winch Out & Vehicle Recovery in Brooklyn

A winch-out is not a tow — it is pulling a vehicle back onto solid ground so it can drive away or be loaded safely. Brooklyn produces its own version of this call: cars dropped off a broken curb cut, wheels sunk in a Gowanus lot after rain, front ends hung up on a snow bank, and vehicles wedged in a garage ramp that was tighter than it looked.

What we recover

If the car cannot drive out under its own traction, a winch line and the right anchor point usually solve it in one pull.

  • Wheels off a curb, into a tree pit, or dropped in a sunken driveway apron
  • Sunk in mud or soft fill on construction and industrial lots
  • Buried in plowed snow or spun out on ice
  • Sand at Coney Island, Brighton Beach, and Plumb Beach access areas
  • Down an embankment along the Belt Parkway or a service road
  • Wedged on a garage ramp, loading dock, or between parked cars
  • Post-collision vehicles resting off the pavement

How the pull is set up

The operator walks the scene first: where the vehicle's frame rails and recovery points are, what the ground under the tires is doing, and which direction has a clear line. We use rated straps and shackles at manufacturer recovery points, snatch blocks to change the angle when a straight pull is not possible, and cribbing or traction boards under tires so the car climbs instead of digging deeper. A bad anchor point bends sheet metal — that is the difference between a recovery and a repair bill.

Why not to let bystanders push it

The two most common ways a stuck car gets expensive are spinning the tires until the pan or exhaust bottoms out on the edge, and looping a strap around a control arm or subframe brace. Both are cheaper to avoid than to fix. Stop the engine, chock what you can, and wait for a rated line.

Winter and storm work

After a snowfall, side streets in Bay Ridge, Marine Park, and Dyker Heights hold plow ridges for days and drivers get pinned in the space they parked in. Coastal flooding around Red Hook, Canarsie, and Sheepshead Bay leaves standing water and silt that swallow tires. We carry traction gear year-round and stage extra crews when a storm is forecast.

When the winch-out becomes a tow

Sometimes the recovery reveals real damage — a bent wheel, a torn oil pan, a hanging bumper cover, a punctured tire sidewall. If the car is not safe to drive after the pull, we load it on the spot rather than sending you off with a problem. You approve the tow and the price before we do it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a winch-out cost in Brooklyn?

It depends on how far the vehicle has to be pulled, the ground conditions, and whether one truck or two is needed. Describe the scene — ideally send a photo — and we quote the total before dispatching.

Can you get my car out of snow without towing it?

Usually yes. Once the tires are back on cleared pavement most cars drive off normally. If a wheel or tire was damaged going in, we will show you and load the car instead.

My car slid off a curb and the wheel is hanging. Is it still driveable?

Do not try to drive it out. Dropping a wheel off a raised curb commonly bends the rim or tears the sidewall and can crack the oil pan. We lift or winch it back onto the road and inspect the corner before you move.

Do you recover vehicles from sand at the beach?

Yes, on legal access roads and lots around Coney Island, Brighton Beach, and Plumb Beach. We use traction boards and low-pressure pulls so the vehicle is not dragged over its own undercarriage.

Will winching damage my bumper or frame?

Not when the line is attached to a rated recovery point. Our operators locate factory recovery eyes or frame rails and use straps and shackles rated well above the vehicle's weight.

Can you handle a van, box truck, or work vehicle?

Yes. Tell dispatch the gross weight and whether it is loaded so we send a truck with adequate winch capacity, and a second unit if the pull needs it.
